Andy Warhol’s Intimate Snapshots of Basquiat, Madonna, and NYC’s 1985 Underground Elite

In 1985, Andy Warhol captured some incredible moments of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Madonna, Keith Haring, Fab 5 Freddy, and Futura 2000. These photos were taken at Radio City Music Hall and Iso restaurant in New York City. Warhol’s diary from June 6, 1985, gives us a glimpse into that exciting night.

Warhol started his evening at Radio City Music Hall for Madonna’s concert. He described her performance as simple, sexy, and Madonna herself as pretty and thinner than before. After the concert, Warhol attended a private party downstairs. Madonna arrived with Jean-Michel Basquiat, having gone backstage to meet her. Warhol noted that Madonna was fun, sweet, and nice.

Later, they headed to Iso, a restaurant on 11th Street and Second Avenue. Madonna arrived there in a truck and was seated next to Warhol. He recalled how great she was, even when teased about her false eyelashes, which were compared to those of artist Louise Nevelson. The atmosphere was lively, with everyone excited and the waiters on the floor with excitement. Madonna even drew on Futura 2000’s pants, adding a playful touch to the night.
